The Future of Democracy
With Guest Byron Belitsos
November 13th, 2008

Listen to the recording now:

We have just seen the culmination of the most exciting election cycle the USA may ever have had. The question many people may be asking now is, "What's next?" That's what we invited our November guest speaker to discuss with us….

There is a new story emerging and with it, new possibilities. The extraordinary events of the recent election, the energy crisis, and the global financial crisis have inspired individual participation in the process of government like never before. How does this enlivened democracy affect you, and what changes do you think are pivotal on our journey towards a world that works for everyone?

Guest speaker Byron Belitsos
is co-author of the book, One World Democracy: A Progressive Vision For Enforceable Global Law. This book is the definitive account for our time of how humanity can abolish war by transforming the United Nations into an effective world democracy. His perspective places American politics within an understanding of "deep politics" and a global dynamic: "Global democracy - or, bottom-up control of planetary affairs by the world's people - is essential if we are to equitably manage the dire challenges humanity now faces. Yet, top-down control of the world by largely unaccountable corporate elites has taken giant steps forward in the last several decades. "Clues to what will happen to planet Earth after the 2008 election can be found, not in what the candidates {said}, but in what remains unsaid - that is, in the domain of "deep politics. It is here that we will find what lies ahead for us as we evolve, either toward a global police state, or toward a democratic world republic — or to some hybrid of the two."
